High Field Magnets
As materials and manufacturing processes improve, high-field magnets are becoming more attainable
for a large group of research applications.
High-field magnets use multifilamentary Nb3Sn windings to produce magnetic fields from 10 Tesla to more than 15 Tesla at 4.2K. Each AMI
high-field magnet consists of a Nb3Sn inner coil (high field region) surrounded by an 8 to
9 Tesla NbTi outer coil (background field).
Coil windings are permeated with epoxy to ensure the absence of voids and prevent wire movement and
its subsequent "training" effects.
Standard high field magnets have bore diameters between 1 inch and 3 inches with homogeneities of
0.1% in a 1 cm diameter spherical volume (DSV).
High field magnets are quite versatile and can be used for a great variety of purposes, including
those listed for standard solenoids.
